Wrapt by Worx

One day I was sitting in a parking lot waiting to go into an appointment when an idea hit me. I've always wanted to do something for children - kids that have struggling homes or are in need. Why not create scarves for them? That was the day that our "give back" project, Wrapt by Worx, was created.

What's the idea behind all this? We want to "wrap" kids with love, hope and accomplishment. Let them know that no matter what is happening in life, there is always someone out there that cares for them.

We shared our idea with the Greencastle Exchange club and they were more than appreciative and accepting to our idea. So, with scissors in hand, we cut 60 lime green scarves, wrapped them in brown paper and sealed them with love. My son, Kandon, was a wonderful model and tester :)

I feel overwhelmed with joy knowing that this Saturday, 60 kids will open a gift that will keep them warm all winter.

Common Myth: I need to advertise in EVERYTHING!!

False. Your budget is important, after all, that's why we set them. Many small business owners feel they need to put a little bit of money into a lot of different advertising vehicles, such as newspaper, magazine, radio and/or television. By doing this, you're not getting the maximum exposure or benefit from each of these mediums. Chances are you're choosing the smallest ad for the least amount of time.

So how do you get more for your money? Find which vehicle gets the most ROI (Return on Investment) and run with it. Lets say you tried newspaper and magazine - the newspaper got a call or two and the magazine ad sent more traffic to your website, resulting in more sales. There is buzz about your magazine ad campaign, and you're establishing a brand. You may want to move your dollars to the magazine.

Now, imagine if you put your advertising dollars into a method that is already working. Maybe it's running your ad more often, or going to a larger size, investing in special issues or doing a profile spotlight. Once you've got your viewers and the return is coming in, you have successfully advertised.

The most important thing to remember is, it doesn't work over night. Many small business owners run 2-3 ads and think they are not working because the doors aren't being run down. Advertising is like fine wine, it gets better with age. It takes time to reach your viewer and establish a brand. This is why staying consistent is so important and why stopping your advertising can hurt, not help, your business.

Over the last year, I've been really fortunate to work side by side with a very talented artist, Melanie Anderson, owner of Anderson Photographs. We are both located in the Arts and Entertainment District in Hagerstown, MD.

Our most recent project together was for a promotional product called, "The Dawg Days of Summer," calendar. Over the summer, Melanie and her staff photographed dozens of local dogs and brought in a judging team to vote on categories such as Best Smile, Cutest Couple, Cutest and Most Unique. The grand prize winner was named the Pupperfold, and received a 2 page spread.

The best part about this calendar? $5.00 from every purchase will go to the Humane Society of Washington County.

The 8 Rules of Business Greeting Card Etiquette

1. Buy Quality Cards:

Show that you value your clients and colleagues. Your recipients might take it as a sign that business has not been good or that they aren’t worth a little investment.

2. Update Your List: Make sure your list is up-to-date with correct names and addresses.

3. Sign Cards Personally: Even if you have preprinted information on the business greeting card such as your name, you need to add your handwritten signature. The most elegant business greeting cards should have your personal signature and a short handwritten message.

4. Handwrite the Address: Don’t use computer-generated labels. They are impersonal and make your holiday wishes look like a mass mailing.

5. Mail to Home Address: Mail your business greeting card to the home if you know the small business owner. Be sure to include the spouse’s name.

The card is not sent to both husband and wife at the business address unless they both work there.

6. Use Titles: Whether you are addressing the envelope to an individual or a couple, titles should always be used. It’s “Mr. John Doe,” not “John Doe,” or “Mr. and Mrs. John Doe, rather that “John and Mary Doe.”

7. Be Sensitive to Traditions: Find out whether your business greeting card recipients observe Christmas, Hanukah, or Kwanzaa. Make sure your message is appropriate for each individual. If you decide to go with one card, choose a generic one that will not offend. “Season’s Greetings” and “Happy Holidays” are safe bets.

8. Avoid the Mail Rush: Mail your business greeting cards in time to arrive for the designated holiday. If you find yourself addressing the envelopes on Super Bowl Sunday, keep the cards until next year and send out a high-quality note thanking people for their business during the previous year instead.

Social media is such a strong part of branding in today's advertising. Here are some tips to keeping things strong and consistent:

1. Set up your social media accounts. Facebook, Twitter, MerchantCircle, LinkedIn, just to name a few. The good news is, you can link them all together so when you update one, they all get updated!

2. Stay consistent. Don't set up your accounts and never use them again. Keep your followers updated with blog posts, newsletters, specials, and respond to feedback. Let them know you are available.

3. Keep in real. Don't pretend to be someone or something that you're not. Let them know who they're working with by using real photos of you, your team and your work. Tell them what your latest and greatest is. If you make a mistake, be the first to come clean. Being honest builds trust.

4. Listen. Answer the questions your customers have, and provide feedback to their questions. Learn what you customers like and dislike. Use online channels to ask questions and find solutions.

5. What comes around.... well you know. Return the favor to your clients. If they need your opinion, give it to them. If you're asking them to do something, don't hesitate to do the same for them. Friend and like local business and blog about what they're doing. After all, word of mouth is about the strongest, free advertising you can get!

Once you get started, it comes naturally to share the word. Set aside 30 minutes on Monday mornings, or whatever day suits you, to update your social media sites.

I come across a lot of great networking information each week. This week I'd like to share some information about GAINS, from a great networking group that I belong to called BNI. These are questions to ask yourself, as well as your peers. How can you help someone grow their business? How can you grow your own business? Here's a good start:

G - Goals

These are the business and personal objectives you want or need to meet for yourself or the people who are important to you. Refining your goals will help you achieve them. The best way to build a relationship with someone is to help them achieve their goals.

A - Accomplishments

People like to talk about the things they are proud of. Some of your best insight into others come from knowing what goals they have already achieved. Know what has worked for you in the past, and apply those accomplishments to the future.

I - Interests

Your interests can help you connect with others. These can be personal things like reading, hiking, visiting wineries, or business interests. People like to spend time with others that share the same interests. Networking with these people with help strengthen your relationship.

N - Networks

Build multiple networks, both formal and informal. These can be organizations, institutions, groups (like BNI), or company's or individuals that you associate with.

S - Skills

The more you know about the talents and abilities of the people in your network, the better equipped you are to find and refer business. The road goes both ways. The more you explain your skills and services to someone, the higher the chance of them passing you qualified referrals. If they do not fully understand your business and what you have to offer, they will not be able to work on your behalf.

Take some time to think about these items. Is there room for some adjusting in your networking ways? Do you need to set some personal and business goals? How can you help others help you?

Networking - staying out of the corner of the room

If you knew me about 3 years ago, you know I was the person standing in the corner avoiding talking to anyone. After all, that would take making conversation with other business owners. It didn't take long for me to realize that I was wasting my time and money, and looking like I was mortified wasn't going to help me get my name out there.

Here's how I overcame networking fear:

1. Who will represent your business if you won't? I came to quick realization that if I couldn't represent my own business, no one else would. How was I going to gain the respect and trust of other local business owners if I didn't see myself? Think of it this way, it's lost opportunities to avoid talking to people.

2. Be Yourself. Why put on a front? Let's say you start talking to someone that is interested in your services and you make promises you know you can't keep. Eventually this person is going to do business with you, or send business your way, and now they know the real you. What kind of reputation is this building? Go in as yourself and represent the things you can do.

3. Talk about the other person. Uncomfortable talking about yourself? Ask the questions! Greet someone, ask them who they are, what they do, where they are located, why did they start their business, what do they specialize in. It's a great icebreaker to get to know someone first. By the time your 10 minutes into it, you've forgotten that you're uncomfortable.

4. Don't talk about the weather. Let's face it, you're not networking to learn what tomorrow's forecast is. You're trying to establish relationships to gain future business. Make a valuable conversation. Ask the question, "How can I get qualified referrals for you?" Make an effort to really learn about that person and what they're looking for. 9 times out of 10, they will ask you the same.

5. Look for other uncomfortable people. Most of the people in the room are just as uncomfortable as you are, some stand out more than others. Find someone that is standing alone, just like you are, and approach them. You can have a laugh about being nervous, and get right into the meat and potatoes of the meeting.

I promise, the more you try these, the better you'll get. I've gotten pretty comfortable talking with complete strangers by treating each little conversation as an opportunity.

MTV changes logo

After nearly 3 decades, MTV is changing their logo. Most of us remember MTV as the music network. To young folks these days, MTV means reality TV. The network decided to simplify the logo and drop the tagline "music television" to reflect the changes they are undergoing and to support future changes.

The logo will also feature a transparent version, where the current slate of talent will be featured. The see through model will showcase new talent as they arise.

All day music videos are a thing of the past my friends.

Tone

The copy you write (or have written) is just as important as the image you are portraying. What type of voice do you want your readers and prospective clients to hear? Depending on the nature of your business, your copy may sound formal or silly, lighthearted or corporate. Which ever direction you take, consistency is the key. Throughout all your marketing materials, you should obtain the same tone. After all, your writing style is part of your brand.

Not sure how to choose a tone? Refer back to your audience. Who are they? What type of relationship are you trying to build with them? What is their age group? The more you can relate to them, the clearer your message will be.

Niche?

You've probably heard the word, but do you have one? Defining a niche is essential in any business. It defines you and what you're best at, and allows you to saturate a hungry market.

You might find that your niche is:

1. What you're most gifted at

2. What is invisible to you (you just do it, without thinking about it)

3. A unique product or service

4. You're the only one doing or selling this

5. Found the fringe of unmet client needs

Sit down and ask yourself, if I could do only one thing for the rest of my life, what would it be? For instance, when asking a handyman that, he might say "well, I'd fix faucets" or "I'd put together furniture." These are lead ways into defining his niche.

Get Customer Attraction

1. THINK LOW TECH, HIGH TOUCH

Make human interaction a priority. Make a phone call instead of sending an email, schedule face to face meetings, send hand written thank you cards.

2. REACH OUT

Call one past client a week to catch up. See how their business is doing, new projects they have, etc. Give them a reason to remember you by offering a “past client” special. Give them a discount, special offer, coupon..

3. TREAT EVERYONE LIKE ROYALTY

You never know who could be your next client. With every handshake you make and phone call you take, model a service-oriented attitude. Show them you are willing to go the extra mile to serve their needs. And always be prompt - don’t let that sticky note with their number on your desk for a week.

4. COLLECT CONTACT INFO

Reach out with special offers through email marketing, newsletters, direct mail, etc. Have a sign up sheet in your store or on your website to collect their information. Give them a reason to sign up by giving an incentive, like “Sign up today and get 10% off tomorrow!”

5. REWARD YOUR RECRUITERS

Happy clients bring new clients! Reward them for doing so. “For every new client you bring though our door, we’ll give you a $10 gift card to ____.” (Or something to that effect.)

The boring stuff.

Identify the boring stuff first, then dress it up

Use facts!

Statistics can be boring on their own, but thrown into a creative headline, you can get your message across while giving living proof!

Use your, well, inner smart-ass.

Quirky lines get attention. People expect the norm, and when you go past your limits you create a whole new sense of awareness.

Make 'em laugh.

Surprise your readers. Start your headline with something calm and end in something that makes them fall off their chair.

What are they getting?

What would the world look like without your product. Give them a message that conveys what they could be missing out on.

Is your business in a recession?

I've never lived through a recession before, but I've learned quick what an effect it can have on a business owner. I also learned that the outcome depends on you and your attitude towards it. My attitude: BRING IT. My business is not in a recession because I treat it that way. Here are some tips to help you feel the same way...

1) Are you advertising? - The first thing people want to do is save money, so what do they do, pull out their advertising dollars. WRONG. This is actually the best time to advertise. Why? Your competitors are pulling out, what a better time to gain market share! When people really start spending bucks again, they'll think of you first.

2) Are you networking? - You are a mobile campaign for your company, and it's free! What's a better way to spread the word about what you do than to tell them yourself? It's about building relationships.

3) Is your image updated? - Are you using marketing materials from 1972? If so, it's time to update. When your potential clients see that you are with the times, they are more likely to do business with you. For instance, are you offering something new and spectacular that everyone else isn't? That should be advertised!

4) Are you on the web? - Since 2000, the percentage of internet usage has gone up 342.2%. That's powerful. Why not take advantage of that? A website is a perfect place to display who you are, what you do and how you do it. Take it a step further, sell your product online.

First Friday Logo Chosen

The logo for Greencastle's First Friday has been chosen and can be found in the windows of participating shops downtown.

If you're not familiar with First Friday, it is a national event that happens in participating cities. On the first Friday of every month, local artists display their work and demonstrate their techniques in the shops on the square. There's anything from painters to poetry readers, musicians and jewelry makers.

This is a hand-made card that I made for a contest at Anna's Paperworks. We were given some materials and told to use them as creatively as we could. I broke out some of my letterpress and stamped the card and used wire to wrap the heart. Loved doing this! I won second prize, so that's not too bad! I'll get a gift certificate to the store, which I can't wait to use!

Located in downtown Greencastle, this is the place you have to check out. It's a haven for paper lovers! The owner has brought the arts downtown by supplying unique papers, handmade rubber stamps and classes galore.

We created a brochure for her that spoke her message - we're here and we love paper! Printed on an 80lb linen, this really showed she means business, paper business! We took the love of art and combined it with her products and, viola!

Worx Highlight - Women to Women

Women to Women is the first and only ladies-only networking group in Greencastle. They will meet once a month at the Antrim House restaurant. What is neat about this? This group will provide the opportunity for women to talk to successful female entrepreneurs, stay at home moms and working mothers/wives. It's a chance to share stories, gain inspiration and get away from the everyday stresses!

If you're in the area on January 22, stop in from 5-7!

Houston, we have light! Today we installed light fixtures and a ceiling fan in the studio. It's starting to look like a real place instead of a construction nightmare.

SF2 just came out, and I have to say that I am in love with the packaging. What an amazing use of type, color and layout. I'm looking into getting this program, it's inexpensive and looks like a great way to manage fonts.

Studio - with color!

We were able to add some life to the studio, simply by adding color! The ceiling is black and the walls are "Worx Green" and "Contempro Teal." The trim and touch ups are all that's left for paint. We're moving right along and have plans to open the doors in mid January.

Hallmark holds a card competition every now and again, and their most recent was to design a Christmas card. The competition was held to benefit the (RED) campaign, which raises money for children with AIDS in Africa. The specs: either use the color red, or, use the (RED) logo in the design. I couldn't pass up this opportunity!

It's been some time since I've updated my blog. Having a baby and starting a business can keep you pretty busy! But the times have rolled around and I'm moving into some new and exciting things!

If you're a native of Greencastle, you know that Sidewalk Sale days is a big thing. I'm excited to say that I will be a vendor in this years festivities! You'll be able to find me Saturday, July 12th from 8-5 handing out flyers, sharing my portfolio and greeting people. It's going to be a great day... Hope to see you then.

I'd love to share my story with you...

My name is Laura Wallace and I am an entrepreneur in the graphic design business. This is how I got here...

I was born and raised in South-Central Pennsylvania. After graduating high school in 2002, I chose to start my college career right away. I attended Bradley Academy for the Visual Arts in York, PA for two years, where I earned my Associates Degree in Graphic Design. From there, I earned a position at the EZ To Use Big Book, a local telephone directory. My duties included creating new and revising existing yellow pages advertising, generate marketing materials and managing the production department. While working at the book, I decided to go back to school to earn my Bachelors Degree. I have been attending the Art Institute Online for the last two and a half years. I will complete my degree September 22, only a few short days away! During all of this, I have done freelance work for an amazing life and business coach since 2002.

After three years in the yellow pages industry, I decided to venture out on my own. I knew the opportunities were out there I just had to go get them. I opened the internet doors to Worx Graphic Design July 1, 2007. Although it seemed risky, it was the right thing to do. Mainly internet based, I have gained contact with many successful coaches and business owners across the country. I've also been able to expand my local market by joining referral groups and making contacts with other business owners.

A few interesting personal facts about me... I have been happily married for four years and we are expecting our first child in October of this year. My favorite artist is Wassily Kandinsky, I love to sit up late at night and paint, my favorite food is Boardwalk Fries and getting on a good roller-coaster is one of my favorite past times.

What else can I say, I am passionate about what I do. I look forward to meeting you and creating something great for your business!
