Liquid Power

Setbacks are a normal progression of business. Maybe things are slow, you're not working with the types of clients you'd like to be, or you're stuck in a mental rut. The mind's natural response to these things are hang our heads and feel bad about our situation. As a result, you're slower to recover from bad situations and may experience more psychological and physical distress. But then there are those people... the ones that always seem to stay calm in the face of disaster. They hold their heads high and nurture the next big idea. We all know a few of these people.

Why do some people battle every setback? Why do some almost seem to thrive on them? What's the difference? Resilience.

Resilience is the ability to cope with problems and recover quickly from difficulties. Think of this trait as a super power - one that you can adapt into your life. Being resilient doesn't take away the stress. It turns it into liquid power! Imagine taking that negative energy and using it to tackle the problem head on. There's a sense of empowerment when you learn the art of resilience because the problem no longer controls you, you control the problem.

So what can you do to become this super human? Here are a few tips that we practice:

  1. Believe in yourself! Self esteem can make or break your future. Believe that you are worth it!
  2. Encompass yourself with other super heroes. We become our surroundings. Filter out the negative people and activities that drain your positive energy.
  3. Know that change is ok. Change doesn't mean things are falling apart. It means that your life is filtering out things to make room for something great!
  4. Take care of you. Sleep. Eat well. Exercise. These things don't just effect your body, but also your mind.
  5. Set goals. What do you want to accomplish? Set some goals that you can obtain in the next week. Month. Year. What are your long term goals? Are you putting things in place to achieve them?
  6. Practice saying "It's ok." This is probably one of the hardest pills to swallow. The next time you face a setback, tell yourself it's ok and start finding ways to overcome the obstacle. Hiding the problem or ignoring it doesn't make it go away.
  7. Be thankful. It's easy to think about how terrible things can be and forget about the many amazing blessings we have! Practice appreciating the things we take for granted.
Resilience is something you can practice in all areas of your life, not just work. Apply your negative energy towards proving your situation wrong. There's nothing quite like staring life in the eye and saying, "I've got this."
